FORD GTX1 PROTOTYPE
The story of the Ford GTX1 Prototype begins with the story of the Ford GT which is a limited production Super Car manufactured to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of Ford Motor Company and the 40th Anniversary of Ford’s legendary GT40 winning streak at the 24 Hours of Le Mans which began in 1966 and was repeated 4 consecutive years, ending Ferrari’s domination of this race. The Ford GT is based upon the original Ford GT40 and was built as a race car for the track or street. A total of 4,038 Ford GT’s were produced. The Ford GT is the most significant production car ever made in the United States. The GTX1 is the Flagship for the Ford GT, and the Ford GTX1 Prototype is the Crown Jewel of the GTX1’s.
The idea for the Ford GTX1 Prototype was conceived by Ford Engineering and Design Supervisor Kip Ewing who was inspired by the 1966 Ford GT40 that was made into a roadster, named the GTX1, and won the 12 Hours of Sebring Race in 1966. Kip envisioned the GTX1 as the second phase of Ford GT, but obtaining approval to build the GTX1 was extremely difficult because the Ford GT was already a masterpiece and the production run was only going to be 2 years; however, the breathtaking design of the GTX1 enabled Kip to obtain approval to build a Prototype and he chose master coach builder Mark Gerisch of Genaddi Design Group to be the builder. The GTX1 Prototype was designed, developed and built by Ford Motor Company and Genaddi Design Group and introduced at the 2005 SEMA Show in Las Vegas, where Ford announced that consumers could own a GTX1 by purchasing a Ford GT and sending it to Genaddi for the Roadster Conversion. The GTX1’s were very expensive to build and fewer than 50 were built when production ended in August 2008, roughly 2 years after the first GTX1 was completed.
The 2005 Ford GT that was to become the Ford GTX1 prototype was built on 6/1/2004. It was the #2 Ford GT produced of a total of 4,038 and the #1 manufactured in red. Originally titled to Ford, it was sold to Genaddi for $1 on 9/15/2005, and a Wisconsin Title was issued and with an odometer reading of 13 miles. Genaddi, sold it to the present owner on 11/19/07 with an odometer reading of 53,570 miles which is indicated on the Georgia Title issued on 1/16/2008. The current mileage as of 9/12/10 is 53,855. The present owner had the car thoroughly refreshed to excellent standards mechanically and cosmetically including a re-paint in the original Valencia Orange Color. It has a clean CARFAX and has never been in an accident. It has no dents or scratches and there are no scuffs on the wheels. It rides and drives as new without any squeaks or rattles and is very powerful with a 5.4L Supercharged DOHC V8 with recent dyno numbers of 626 RWHP and 585 torque. The present owner drives the car very sparingly but regularly enough to keep it mechanically sound. It remains on a trickle charger, under a soft car cover, in a climate controlled garage in Atlanta.
Jeremy Clarkson, the British Automotive Television Celebrity for “Top Gear” featured the GTX1 Prototype in his DVD “The Good, the Bad and The Ugly”, in which he said of the Prototype “it’s sensational, really as good as anything I’ve ever driven!” In addition to countless magazine articles about the Ford GTX1 Prototype, for more than 2 years, Motor Trend Magazine used the GTX1 Prototype in their monthly advertisements for their website and their prestigious Golden Caliper Trophy which is awarded each year to their “Car of the Year.”
The Ford GTX1 Prototype is the most rare, unique, famous, recognizable exotic car in the USA.
