Description:
|
Freddy is an exact clone of the Shelby Mustang GT350R, #16, raced by Freddy van Buren in 1966 to an SCCA Championship. He won his class at Sebring and Daytona in B Production Class in 1967.
Freddy was built from a 1965 Mustang stripped to bare metal by noted race car constructor Todd Landon, of Minnesota, specifically for the Carrera Panamericana.
As with the original, Freddy has a 289 and four speed manual. As run in the Carrera in 2006 he had aluminum heads, producing 400 horsepower, in Unlimited Class. After the Carrera, I purchased the car, had the engine rebuilt with iron heads for Historic Class (to 350hp), new NASCAR springs and improved the roll cage, fire systems, etc.
The car is so good a clone that it weighs exactly the same as a production Shelby, 2781 lbs (with a quarter tank). He even has a Shelby plate but that is cosmetic.
The car is street registered in California, and is titled as a 1966 Mustang.
The original car was sold at Goodings in 2006 for $748,000.
Freddy was run in the 2009 Texas 1000 and was featured in Vintage Motorsports, May 2010.
