depending on what side drill bit you can fit in between the cylinder liners through the freeze plug hole will tell you what block/cyl cores are in there.

I have heard of the drill bit or allen wrench test to see if a 390 block is a candidate to be bored to a 428. Even then it is a quick and dirty test (to rule blocks out) that should be followed up by sonic testing. What I have read is that the 427 blocks didn't have much extra meat. Sonic testing would be a must do in my warped mind.
