When I visit my friendly machine shop, I always bring either a cardboard template, ruler, or both. Then I put my stuff down in front of the guy and say, "see, I want you to take this much off and then make it look like this." If I had to describe it in purely "machinist terms" it would absolutely, positively come back wrong.
