Yes, you put a gasket under the pan and under the carb.

I got my car with a turkey pan and small air cleaner. Because I have to fit it with a PCV and closed breather to pass the California exam, and because I wanted better breathing for daily driving, I fit it with a long oval that has room on the underside to attach the breather hose. Both look good and fit well. I will be putting the pan and S&H cleaner back on for show, but the long oval has twice the breathing area of the little cleaner. Some folks have done calculations and shown that a K&N filter in the small air cleaner should provide enough flow, but a K&N in the long oval leaves no question about it.

It's your choice. Both look good and even the long oval is reasonably correct.
