They still have the policy enacted. In the city, you are allowed 1 child. You can have another one, but you have to pay through your nose. In rural areas, they are allowed 2 children. Right now, the birthrate in China is roughly 119 boys for every 100 girls, but in rural areas, the number of boys increase considerably. This isn't so apparent in the city as it is in rural farm country where there are very few women. When China adopted this law, girl babies seemed to disappear as they could not do as much work on the farm as a boy could. This was when the 1 child policy was enforced everywhere. The men in rural China are trying to bring the women from the city to the country, but somehow, the women just don't want to live a life of dirt floors, no windows or doors, and lots of physical work.
