My neighbor across the street about 100' has 3 different brands and at times he can't get a signal at all to call me and has to use his house phone. Yea the signal is a must always that is why I recommend one of each technology because (as I am sure you are aware) the different signal types react differently to the same environment. Better chance that 1 of them will have a signal. I would suggest a flea market and get an old one that still works. You might be able to pick up a few for the price of a new one.
