You do need to buy the whole cap. Definitely use the fishing line trick or a teflon "Bone" tool to pry it off. I went with the black cobra cap and it looks great and top notch quality. I did have to make a run to the hardware for a new o-oring as mine was a little loose when installed.

On another note - purchased the leather wrapped steering wheel from Finishline (the replica not the moto-lita). Great price...but the finish is unpolished. It was a winter project last year to sand and polish...i think it took me 10 hours to sand with progressively finer grit then polish with a wheel. Looks beautiful...but now I know why Kirkham charges what they do to brush or polish the bodies as an option.
