Is your sender of the open collector (effectively a switch to ground) variety, my sender is, so requires a pull-up resistor (1-10K should be OK) to 5V to work properly. If this is the case you could use the signal directly or if you're still worried use a comparator with hysteresis (or a schmidt trigger) - email me if you need further details.
