I'd have to guess from looking at the pics that the poles were aluminum, or some other lighter than steel material. If those poles were steel, the damage would have been far greater. The fact that the cars held up the poles instead of being crushed flat would indicate to me that the poles are a lot lighter than they could have been. Possibly, the wind wouldn't have taken down more substantial poles, I don't know, but the damage would have been far more extreme if they were heavier. While it looks pretty nasty, and I wouldn't want to be any one of those owners, it looked like it could have been far worse if those poles had fallen in different directions. Fortunately it looks like the majority fell across lines of cars instead of along the line,taking probably 6-10 cars with one pole.
