The original location is on a bracket off the front of the water pump that goes between the pump and the OEM filter mount. On FEs, in ERAs, Kirkhams and CSXs at least, it's not in the way of anything there.

I'm not sure if that will work on a small block or in your engine compartment, but it's what you want to attempt if originality or original looks are in any way important to you. Surely there must be an SB variant of the bracket out there...?
