It's not a "fix it" ticket in CA anymore. I don't have the exact fine, but off the top of my head it's something like $100. They probably won't stop you just for that, but a cop having a bad day would be happy to add it to your tab if say you get pulled over for speeding.

According to this source, no front plate (Vehicle code 4457) is still a fix-it ticket.

Funny story: I got a no front plate ticket a number of years ago. Hung the plate and went to the Sheriff's station. Sheriff asked if I now had a front plate - said yes - asked if the car was here - said yes - he signed my ticket without even looking out the window. Must have figured nobody would be dumb enough to call his bluff!
