On metal parts that flex with high repetition, a scratch or a machined sharp edge often is the place where a crack starts. That is why they radious edges, grind, sand blast, and shot peen things like rods and crank shafts. To eleminate the places where cracks can start.

I would say a push rod could be considered in such a service, depending on many factors.
