No, with an SLR there was a mirror that flipped up to expose the film. (which is why your viewfinder went blank. (it was optical - through the lens).

Why not just display the image the CCD or CMOS sensor sees in the viewfinder?

My 8700 does exactly this and looks just as good as the optical viewfinder.
