Just returned to Gainesville Ga. 700 cubs, scouts and families celebrating 100 years of scouting. Even though I am not an American citizen, it was a very humbling experience, which I will never forget.
Slept in the enlisted mens quarters above the hangar deck over the fantail.
On the way out this morning, stopped to thank the volunteer veteran at the desk for granting me the privilege of visiting his vessel. He said " Oh, I joined the navy later, in 1943 I was a pilot in B-17s over Germany. I am 88 years old, and I volunteer here for those who can't be here now". It brought tears to my eyes. How can we teach the young people just how much freedom REALLY costs?
