Dana ... that used to happen all the time on my toploader in the Galaxie .... also hung up between 1st and 2nd on a hard shift . Finally cured it by going to the complete Hurst package ... linkage and shift lever . To get it unstuck , go under the car with a screwdriver and move the lever(s) back where it/they belong . You can also use a small hammer and LIGHTLY tap the levers back. This happens when you try to take it out of reverse and are pulling back and to the right as you come out . I bet if you move the lever straight back and let it find its own center before trying to find first , that won`t happen . Another cause is weak springs on the shift lever itself . Take the lever off and there will be two "buttons" on each side and behind them are the springs .... maybe they are missing or the buttons stuck ?? That`s what centers the shift lever . The balls where the shift rods fasten can be worn and have too much slop also . On the Hurst unit I got , there were new connecting "balls" .
