When does the DMV put the VIN number on your car?

The reason why I ask is because my car is in NC for the moment and I need to haul it down here. I don't have a truck and UHaul gives me 3 days with their truck. I would like to trailer it down here and put the VIN number on it within the time frame that I have the UHaul truck.

Sorry for getting back to you so late but I work from 6am til 9 pm at night.

Hindsight being 20/20 I should have held onto my Suburban a little longer.
