Well patrickt, I thought I was going to owe you a great big thank you for this tip, but it didn't work out that way...

This weekend I replaced the old rubber shifter boot using a new Superformance boot from Olthoff Racing. Like others on this thread, the boot is so stiff that it keeps pulling the lever out of third gear. I pulled up the boot to expand the bellows like in your photo and tied the top tightly with some wire, but it's still popping out of gear. Augh!!

Any ideas? Does anyone sell an original-style shifter boot but in leather or vinyl instead of rubber (these things don't seem to last very long anyways...).
