Default Type of fuel sending unit ?

I have a fuel gauge sending unit question-

I have 1999/2000 year...VDO electric gauges now. I just bought the electric Nisonger Instruments/Smith Cobra gauges. Yeah !
Peter Bayer is one heck of a guy.

I need to find out which type of sending unit I have for the new gauge.
What do I need to do ?

Below is part of a post I found on the net. I have no frickin idea what the #ell it means, as I'm clueless to electronics !

Different sending units for electronic speedometers. They listed the following - Signal generators or Hall Effect Generators/Switches, Vehicle Speed Sensor VSS, Magnetic Proximity Sensor, Signal Converters
