Depending on how lopey/snotty your cam is, will it cruise in 5th w/o bucking? Your 5th cruise RPM is going to be really low at normal speed limits.
I have a TKO600 with .64 5th gear behind my 427 FE with a 3.50 rear axle, which has a pretty aggressive cam but its not a wildly built engine. I too wrestled with this after building the car. A year later and 4k miles, I have no regrets. My setup has enough low-range grunt to cruise at 60 mph no sweat, but I rarely do because the package just feels better staying in forth under 70 mph. However, the rocket ride from 70 to 140 mph in 5th is better than any Six Flags ride.
