Not so....if that were the case the 66 Mustang would not have used the same tail lamps as the 65, in fact, no federal regulation called for separate turn and stop lamps....there are still cars with "combo" lamps. I don't know why AC/Shelby did it as the Lucas rectangulars have a reflector area.
There seem to be two types of round lamps in use, a glass lens that is held in a rubber gasket and a plastic lens that snaps onto the base as seen on AC MK IVs, etc.
