The wiring is actually pretty simple. Contact Blas (he posts here) and get a copy of the amazing SPF wiring diagram he created. It accurately and completely lays out the entire wiring, including component description and p/n's, wire sizes and color codes.
If you have a decent understanding of electrical circuits, you can replace all wiring yourself. All components are available at any good auto parts store. You will probably want to go to Hillbank for the wire to maintain the original color coding.
Using one, I have made a lot of changes to my car's wiring; eliminated some unused circuits, rerouted the alternator charging wire, replaced the ammeter with a voltmeter, simplified the starter circuit, etc.
