It's not a good system, but you're stuck with it. Sometimes agents will help you work through a claim with your own carrier; sometimes not. Sometimes there's not a lot they can do -- once there's a loss, it's all between you and the insurance carrier. What you need to do is keep calling your insurance company (and keep a log of each time you call/leave an unreturned voicemail/etc.) until you speak with the adjuster. Do you have a friend who is a lawyer? Or a relative that is a lawyer? If you can't get a return call from your own carrier, a fax from a lawyer will usually do the trick to wake them up. Plus, it never hurts to hear a run-down on some of the angles that you might not be thinking about. Stuff like diminution of value claims, how the different parts of your policy play in, who's fault the accident might be, and so on, and so on. I don't know whether you're in a no-fault state or an "old fashioned" fault state (like mine), but there are a lot of nuances to even a simple cheapo (say, under $50k damage) claim. And, trust me, insurance companies are not your friend... even when they're your insurance company.
