Paul, If you use a tubing cutter it won't scatter metal filings in the tube. Then hold one piece vertical ( cut end down) and pull a small rat tail file toward the ground taking the lip off. Holding it in the same position with a pan underneath pour some isopropyl alcohol through from the top which will flush and clean it for weld prep. Do the same to the other piece.
