Tire development was still in its infancy (increasing widths) and the FIA wheels as we know them were not yet created. The Kidney Bean design was a carryover from other narrow tire class racing, even Indy cars of the era, although they may have been a larger diameter wheel.(??) They first appeared on some of the early comp cars, prior to the FIA cars being created.
