Tim,
Give me a little different description of symptoms. When you turn key to crank position what sound or action? ... does it just click or make a terrible grinding sound or engine turns over but slow -pauses - then turns over a little more but slow then starts?

If it is too much timing and sounds like last description then try flooding the engine a little. Floor the throttle maybe twice before hitting the key. By flooding a bit it will allow engine to spin over even when hot without bumping against the starter. It will gain a little extra RPM before it trys to start.
