I would take the safer approach and remove the belt to do this. There have been instances of people loosing fingers when messing around serpentine belts. It will happen before you know it...won't hurt at first, but you'll wanna put your detached finger on ice and get ur ass to the ER ASAP.
Take the belt off, rub a bar of ivory soap on the grooved section of the belt, reinstall, then look at your hands and thank yourself for having common sense. Positive result all around. Just a side note, if you use the liquid kind, I would think it would fling around and create a mess.
