It's hard to believe that the Cobra is celebrating its 50th birthday. I recall reading that first road test (Road & Track, or was it Car & Driver?) like it was the day before yesterday. I still remember every Cobra that I ever spotted on the street.
Shelby, always the master flimflam man. equipped the first 260 Cobra provided for testing with what was essentially a race prepped engine. The numbers recorded by the magazine raised the bar for production vehicles by a bunch; try 0-60 in 4.2 seconds and a 12.2 quarter at 112 mph. Later tests of "normal" 271 hp 289 Cobras were less impressive, with numbers closer to those being turned in by the 454 Chevelles and other big block muscle cars.
