This is not an odd design and if you look at a number of performance cars with springs changed to progressive spring rates the height of the relaxed spring is shorter and you get a gap it is not going to leave the car without the strut also leaving. You will see the same thing, including the BMW M3 which the suspension is based on when you add "H&R" type perfomance springs.

If you don't like it, sell it, buy a different car. It might fit you better.
