Default Jag Rear Brake Problem

I'm just now getting to the point of bleeding the rear brakes on #778 and ran into what might be a serious problem. One of the brake bleeders is leaking - right out the center hole, no matter how hard I try to snug it down.

If I switch the bleeder to the other caliper, the problem moves with it.

The rear end is a 1985 XJ-6 that ERA supplied, already rebuilt. What can the problem be? Is there supposed to be an o-ring or anything in the hole to create the seal or is it just the metal to metal contact? I have a Ja g manual for an earlier model that shows a steel ball with the bleeder. Should I have one?
