My advice is to get the title first (stop in the local office and do all your out of state title swaps the same day), then when the physical title comes in the mail, go back and register the car. Again, I do not suggest going the historic route, as that requires a scrutinization from the special titles/registration division on State street in Trenton. When they catch your deception, they will revoke your title, and make you jump through hoops as if you were titling the car for the very first time. Staying under the radar is the only way to go these days if you want to keep it simple.
