Recently most Major Tire Shops won't do this, especially if the steel wire is damaged by the nail or whatever punctured the tire, I think it's a liability matter, they can't even sell used tires in Ca. and AZ anymore.
if the wire mess is not damaged a good old patch and perhaps a tube will work, but don't go too fast...you never know.
Good luck, find a good old time gas station or small tire shop...they will most likely fix it.

Well Bill you might be right, I called out to five different shops and all said no can do. I did find, as you also suggested, a small shop that would do it but there was no guarantee it would hold up. At this juncture it appears I'm going to spend the $400 or so for a new tire.
