I have boiled a couple of cups of water in the microwave while getting tools needed ready. Place hose end in hot water for a min or 2 to soften a bit. Place a small amount of silicone grease on barb fitting. Push the tapered end of needle nose pliers in the heated hose end in attempt to expand hose, work it as possible. Repeat as needed but in the end ya gotta just go for it and push fitting in hose end.

PS I found clamp in my inverted flare tool kit will help hold the hose in a vise just like Barry was making out of wood. GOOD LUCK.
