Hi SkipB,
I think the issue with the Holley Street Avenger has more to do with Roush than with Holley. Supposedly, Roush tuned these carbs for their engines and a lot of people had problems with them. Especially, those built in 2004-2005 which is when my engine was built. D111 on this forum has the same 342R motor as me and had the same problem. He sent his back to Holley and they changed some of the "Roush tuned" parts and adjusted his carb and it ran great when he got it back. I could of done that, but I wanted mechanical secondaries and a more race oriented carb, so I ordered a new one istead of speeding time on the Holley. I've read many postes on this forum and on FFCARS.com where others spent lots of time and money trying to fix their Roush tuned Holley to no avail and eventually ended up replacing it. I didn't want to go down that road.
I've also read many threads where people have had problems with the BG carbs a well. Some have great luck with them and some don't. I personally think that BG had some quality control issues on some of their parts. I think they are now out business form what I've heard so maybe the issues had something to do with that or their failing business had something to do with the quality control issues. If anyone is a BG fan, please don't beat me up about what I just said. I am only repeating what I have heard from others.
Anyway, I don't know what I am going to do with the Holley. I may contact them and se if they can check it out for me and make the changes to it that they did for D111. Then I would probably sell it on eBay or keep it for a spare.
I just took my car out again a few minutes ago and it is a beast! The throttle response and power is awesome! I also believe that the reason mine runs so well is because of Brent at B2 motorsports and his vast knowledge and experience. He set my carb up specifically for my engine and changed almost all the jets, bleeds and power valve, etc. He nailed it perfectly. His price was almost the same as Jegs and Summit, but he spends the time to completely disassemble and inspect the carb, change the jets, etc to suit the specific engine and send it out. I called him several times with questions and was always available and helpful. I can't say enough about his service!
Anyway, I'm glad the Holley is working for you and again, I think the problem is more with Roush and how they set the carb up than with Holley.
