Rick, I've owned one car with a mechanical tach (a 1969 Datsun 2000 Roadster). The cable, that was just like a speedo cable, screwed in to the base of the distributor. 1) It broke a lot; 2) It made the needle bounce a lot at idle; 3) I question whether it was accurate; 4) It leaked oil on one end or the other, I can't remember, heck, maybe both. That's the only experience I have with mechanical tachs.
