Olddog, I have seen individual gaskets as well as the four port per gasket. Some do not use a gasket and rely on the machined surfaces of the head ports and ex. manifold.

If running an aluminum head the gasket protects the exhaust ports machined surface. The steel header expanding / contracting at different rates than the aluminum cyl. head can scrub or work this surface.
