We've been using tubular fuel senders for a while now and they have been working really well for us.

I think you might be onto something with the rate of fuel movement in and out of the sender. The ones we use only have approx. 10mm diameter tube. I have attached a photo.

Unfortunately we don't have any experience with the marine VDO ones.
