Been there, almost done that.

Many years ago while driving my hi-po Mustang, I ended up in a line of slow moving traffic where there normally was never any traffic. This was on a secondary 2 lane highway. Being 20 something and in a big rush (for no other reason than I had a fast car) I pulled out into the passing lane and hammered it. Within a few seconds I was running through the gears and passing cars like they were standing still, actually they were standing still.

As I approached the head of this long line of cars, the car at the very front appeared to be lost and as I was getting close to him, he began to make a left hand turn in front of me. However, he wasn't really sure he was in the right place so he sort of stopped SIDEWAYS IN MY LANE. There was a child in the back seat and I could see him/her with his face glued to the window watching me bear down on them at a crazy speed. I jumped on the brakes as hard as I could and started running back down through the gears.

I was absolutely sure that I was going to T-bone that car. When I was only a few car lengths away from the impact, the driver of the next car in line must have looked in his mirror and saw me coming. He pulled off the pavement onto the shoulder giving me just enough room to get through. I somehow managed to get back on the gas, and blast through the opening. I don't think that I was ever so scared in all my life. If I had hit that car, I would have almost certainly killed that child.

So the moral of the story is that young guys driving high performance cars will do very stupid things.
