It could be heat build-up in the motor. I've had that before I switched to the by-pass regulator and the relay power supply. I've seen the motor magnets actually move from the heat softening up the adhesive holding them in place. They are not fastened by screws. Yes, fuel does cool the pump. That's why Aeroomotive does the inline route. On pumps like the Holley, the heat hurts the motor, which sees very little cooling from the fuel. When I wrote cool to the touch, I meant the motor.
