I also read smokey's books where he mentioned that chain wobbling around like crazy, but consider that most of this was writen years ago.

chains have improved since that time.

gears are noisy (which I like) and tranfer crank vibration to the valve train, which may not be good.

for our (chevy) race engines we always used a belt drive.
