Your best bet is to take it through the SB100 process. As Jim mentioned, the State of California will probrably honor the out of state registration, but what happens down the road is uncertain. Get the SB100, you'll be registered correctly for CA and smog exempt for the life of the car.
It's not that difficult and there are probably still a bunch of numbers left.
