The trick back in the day to make a 390 better was to put a set of 428 heads on, but now there is aluminum. To raise the compression up ford had .015 steel shim head gaskets, if you can find some of these they were recommended in the Ford Musle parts book along with a couple different cam options! Part number for the steel shim is
C3AZ-6051-B and fit 390-427-428 if you can find them!
