No reason to leave it in if you run EFI and an electric fuel pump. Just block off the fuel pump opening, or use a late EFI 302 timing cover that has no fuel pump opening.

Something else to watch for. Ford played games with bellhousing bolt patterns in '64 and '65 on small blocks. You may need a bellhousing specific to your early block (if you can find one), which may limit your trans choices. Everything from '66 up should interchange.
