Default carbon on piston tops

I'm rebuilding an engine and would like to take advantage of some downtime by cleaning up my components that will go back in the engine. Does anyone know how to get the carbon buildup off the top of the pistons? Someone wrote on some other site to soak them in Acetone. I tried that and it didn't work at all.

On a weird side note, I'm designing a billet aluminum 302 for Kirkham Motorsports. I'd be curious what improvements you would advocate putting into a custom designed engine. I'm speaking mainly of the block. The components will be off the shelf. Things like piston cooling or what size of oil galley's. Stuff like that.
