OK - I found a black foam that's very similar to the pad installed at the factory. I think the factory installs it for noise reduction - not stone protection.

I got the foam from McMaster-Carr. $39. It's PN 86375K252. The description is: Quick Recovery Super Resilient Foam, Adhesive backed, 1/4" thick, 24" x 24", Soft. It feels very much like the factory stuff. The adhesive seems adequate but if it lets got I'll use some butyl or other adhesive.

I installed it today in front of the factory foam (front fenders only). There was just enough for both sides. I noted that there were lots of white specks under the fender - I think these are where stones hit so the pattern shows where the protection is needed.
