OK, here's an update.
First of all, I
think pulling the diff on a CSX might be easier than dropping a full size lakewood bell from a CSX. Maybe.

Huge PITA. Glad I got to do both in the last few days.

No way to "pop the cover and take a peek" at all.
Anyway, my "clutch" problem is solved - I sheared one of the stub axles (left rear)

. I was impressed with the beefy Dana rear end in these cars (yes Pat it has 4 spider gears), but a little surprised at the puny stub axles.

Broken axle (diff is upside down on table, it was left rear)
Any suggestions on how to upgrade the axles? There's a local shop here that specializes in Jag rear ends and can do the work, but guidance on upgrades would be helpful.
