The production Mustang was pretty well locked up as to design when the "Mustang II" was shown. It was intended to "tease" the Mustang prior to introduction. This is commonly done in the industry, in fact Ford has just shown a concept truck, "Atlas" that is based on the 2014 F150. The last two Mustang generations have also had production based "concepts" shown before intro of the real car.
