Default 289 taillights

A couple of photos used for reference have confused me. Could someone please confirm for me the relationship of the tallights on a street (leafspring) 289 to the trunk space?
The internal trunk sheet metal on my car is riveted to the square and tubular framework running down the trunk sides internally. This means the back of the taillight is in the wheelarch, and will need protecting from the spray thrown up by the rear wheel. That's fine, but one pic I've seen on the CSXinfo gallery pages looks like the panelling turns away from the trunk towards the back of the car, thereby bringing the back of the taillights into the trunk and therefore protected from the elements. Which is correct? Did they change?
Thanks,
Roger
BTW - Nick's battery tray is a lovely bit of fabrication - thanks, Nick!
