I used a painless loom on my LS1 which was for a C5 vette with the DBW and it worked a treat. I just made sure I used the parts they listed to use in their manual I.E coolant temp sensor.
Was very straight forward and not as you say "an ugly duckling" I don't believe. hehe fn he.
