Since my sister no longer lives in Texas and no longer has her Jeep Wagoneer, I can tell the story.
She had bought a Jeep in AR with a catalytic converter-free (removed) 1986 V8 360 AMC engine. She moved from OK to TX but had to keep AR license on the vehicle because TX and OK checked to see if anybody had removed converters. Remember how bad the old ones smelled?
She drove to Texarkana, AR from Dallas, TX every year to get an AR plate and inspection sticker. She was a student and technically still an AR resident. She never had any trouble but I don't know that anybody ever questions WHY she had a Arkansas license plate in TX or OK.
A lawyer friend on our city council in Jonesboro, AR took his daughter to college in NY in a rental truck on a one way rental. He took his .357 Colt Python and followed Northwest Airline's recommendation about transporting his gun. Gun and ammo were checked in separate pieces of luggage. Gun was not loaded and he told desk people at Northwest what he had done. After our mayor, governor and Attorney General wrote letters and countless phone calls, he was released. I am not sure if he had to get FFL dealer to ship his gun to FFL dealer in Arkansas.
No real point except be careful, tell people what you are doing and hope for the best.
Best wishes,
Russell
